Shulkin’ With Savage She-Hulk #8

Dan Slott’s She-Hulk run was one of the first comics I completely read. It is a lot of fun but I decided to give the original shot a try. I know Byrne’s run is really were regarded and that the character was created for copyright purposes but how is the actual comic? I decided to check it out. This time – issue 8 of Savage She-Hulk – Among the Ogres

Deadly danger!

Recap! Last time Jenn and her suddenly rich new friend Rory Richardson (aka stand in for Steve Gerber) decided to head down to Florida to buy Man-Thing’s swamp. When the owner F. A. Schist was missing, Rory bought the old radio station he used to work out just because he wanted to – and used it to offer a reward to find Schist. Meanwhile Jenn went to the swamp for clues, fought a gator as She-Hulk and was abducted by ogres who guarded the Fountain of Youth – but when you soak in it instead of simply drinking it, you turn into a monster…. Unless you already are a monster. Instead she loses her emotions, including the rage that powers She-Hulk and turns into Jenn again and joins the commune of immortals of La Hacienda.

Of course while Jenn is having an adventure, Rory is stuck talking to Professor Slaughter who was the last person to see Schist. Schist had been turned into an ogre and then was killed by Man-Thing. Because the story is batshit crazy, Rory doesn’t believe Slaughter but pays him anyway and decides to look for Jenn.

Back at La Hacienda, alligators attack one of the residents and nobody wants to do anything about it until Jenn is like “hey maybe we should deal with these goddamn alligators!”

Her controversial anti-being-eaten-by-alligators plan gets her branded as a heretic and sent to court. Jenn burns the people by pretty much saying “you aren’t really living forever if you aren’t doing anything,” though Jenn isn’t aware that if you do things as an immortal you start to age or something. Everyone feels dumb and the decide to tear down the Fountain of Youth.

As Jenn starts to leave, she runs in to Man-Thing, feeling her fear of being alone in a swamp. The fear turns to anger and the Jenn turns into She-Hulk and She-Hulk ain’t afraid and she ain’t burning at the touch of the Man-Thing.

Shulkie keeps on beating the crap out of Man-Thing and getting angrier and angrier until Man-Thing runs out of energy because of all of the energy.

Luckily after defeating Man-Thing, Jenn turns back and finds Rory and Jenn leaves to return home to LA after smooching a bit with Rory.
