Dan Slott’s She-Hulk run was one of the first comics I completely read. It is a lot of fun but I decided to give the original shot a try. I know Byrne’s run is really were regarded and that the character was created for copyright purposes but how is the actual comic? I decided to check it out. This time – issue 6 of Savage She-Hulk – Enter: The Invincible Iron Man!
B-list Avenger Iron Man is on the way to deal with the murder of one his employees – the trucker who died waaaay back in issue 2. And the trucker apparently became the Box Ghost. So when Iron Man goes in to talk to Sheriff Walters things break apart.
Walters mentions She-Hulk was the murderer (it was actually that robot that was stolen from Stark Co) but before Iron Man can go and wrap his head around a female Hulk, Jenn comes in, ready to take down the evil that is Iron Man and his boss Tony Stark! But Jenn gets so caught up in the anger that she starts to transform and has to run away.
But she decides running into the street is the best plan and you get two fantastic moments. Firstly:
The guy trying to shop the lady turning green and strong in front of him. The other dude is just relaxing there, he looks more like a bum than someone who got pushed over. He’s letting his papers grow, he probably got fired – I blame the orange suit.
And then immediately after
SHERIFF WALTER’S MOUTH IS THE BIGGEST EVIL IN THIS COMIC. Besides Buck. I hate you Buck Bukowski.
And so Sheriff Walters is ready for this. The She-Hulk has been threatening this town. She attacked him. She killed people.
Iron Man starts to fight and he’s using old school Hulk busting moves but the fact that She-Hulk is actually intelligent means that she makes a made fool out of him.
So She-Hulk is eventually reveals that she can speak and Iron Man is like “oh….”. And they realize they should work together to solve the murder. But what do we need right now? How about a Zapper interlude?
You don’t want to hang with Zapper? Too bad.
Zapper went to his college friend to get some free blood testing done to try and help Jen to control her changes.
Back at the beach She-Hulk and Iron Man find the skull of the robot that was sent to impersonate She-Hulk.
Iron Man realizes the worker whose murder he was sent to solve was actually betraying him and his company so Iron Man jets off leaving She-Hulk on the beach, angry.
Seriously Iron Man. Don’t be a dick.
Back at the court, Jenn accuses Tony Stark of working with the snake loving criminal Trask since Trask had so much Stark tech. Jenn is pounding Tony in the court room because he is still trying to help the worker’s wife so Jenn decides to do some more snooping so she goes to the criminal warehouse where she found the evidence originally. The thugs try to get a jump on here but she’s the
And she is cold as hell. Literally.
But she’s not just a fighter, she also has “other skills.”
Wait a second. Not like that.
And with the confession Jenn realizes what Tony was doing – trying to protect the feelings of another person. Jenn apologizes to Tony, Buck is an asshole and the issue ends.
Next time on the Savage She-Hulk!
My favorite Bowie album!
