Dan Slott’s She-Hulk run was one of the first comics I completely read. It is a lot of fun but I decided to give the original shot a try. I know Byrne’s run is really were regarded and that the character was created for copyright purposes but how is the actual comic? I decided to check it out. This time – episode 2 of Savage She-Hulk: DEATHRACE!
Jenn is out of the hospital after some time has passed and her friend Jill is concerned. They used to be close – and Jill, while legitimately concerned is kind of a dick about it.
Also for this issue, Lee is gone as is Buscema so on writing we have David Anthony Kraft and Mike Vosburg is doing the art. Kraft did the entire first 2 year run and the comic feels slightly different than issue 1 but it is still a lot of fun. Vosburg meanwhile was part of the early underground comics scene but here he’s doing a solid, albeit company style looking comic.
Jenn is still trying to defend Lou Monkton from Nick Trask who has nothing in relation to the other Trask family of the X-men fame as far as I know. While Trask’s henchmen confessed to the crime because it was done under threat of She-Hulk the doesn’t stand and Jenn’s rival lawyer Bukowski ain’t gonna deal with it.
Jenn makes a deal to drop the charges against Trask’s men who attacked her twice if they’d confess again and they agree.
With her cards in prepared she confronts Trask who spends him time rubbing his snake in front of Jenn.
Jenn thinking everything is cool goes off to a party with Jill and her mother and Zapper.Zapper looks like Freddie Mercury with a fro.
Jill ends up going to help Jenn with a favor but uses Jenn’s car so Trasks men start chasing her and Jenn She-Hulks out in front of Zapper before knocking him out.
So Trask’s men are chasing Jill in Jenn’s car and who shows up but “Buck” Bukowski? Buck knows Jenn is probably in danger from the She-Hulk because he knows what Jenn’s car looks like – and meanwhile Jill realized the car won’t stop. We got a chase going.
Jill ends up driving through Trasks’ base – we get a hint of something secret coming soon, and we finally end up on the highway overpass. Jenn tries to stop Jill but Buck hits her so Jenn drops the car onto an oil tanker and Jill presumably dies.
Buck blames She-Hulk for the murder and the police go after her til she escapes.
At the court house Buck is freaked to see Jenn alive and then she wins the case freeing Monkton and Jenn, like any grieving person does, rubs her victory in Buck’s face.
Next time – The Savage She-Hulk is wanted for Murder!
