How Many X-factor Members Do You Know?

We here at Nerdcenaries like to be hip and on the ball so we decided to do one of those Quizzes where we ask you to name comic characters and by name comic characters we mean choose between two names attacked to an image we got off Google Image Search and didn’t attribute because we have better things to do than that. Like make more of these quizzes. How many X-factor Members do you know?

Struggling With Faith While Drinking With Herc: Religion In the Marvel Universe

In Jason Aaron’s first arc of Thor: God of Thunder, he introduces a character known as Gorr the God Butcher, an alien who saw his fellow people die when the gods they believed to failed to save his world from drought, famine and injury. The faithful were seen as brutal but weak minded people, driven by conviction in the face of proof via absence that god did not exist. Driven out Gorr eventually finds two of his gods, leads to the death of both and then using the weaponry of one, begins a campaign of slaughter across the universe killing gods, culminating in him rewriting the timeline so that he might kill all gods of the universe using the God bomb. With that power to shape the world, to fell deities, he becomes recognized as a god himself, but does that make him a god?

Marvel RPG One Shots: Avengers Assemble!

I am a fan of RPGs and it is so much easier to get players into RPGs that they can easily visualize what is going on and even more so when they can learn the game easily so my interest in the TSR Marvel Superheroes RPG has been steadily growing because it uses Marvel characters, it is super easy to visualize and the rules make sense. If they don’t I honestly go by feeling like a real Marvel Editor. In addition, all of the books are in a strange legal gray area so you can download them all here, – really you just need the player’s guide and the judge’s book for this.

So now my goal or one of them is to try and make some new content with the Marvel RPG system – update some characters and try some new rules (so many characters had radios as important technological features), especially since Heroclix makes is easier to get exact figures of most of the characters you might want to use, and usually you can get them on a budget (except for a good Janet Van Dyne Wasp and Clint Barton Hawkeye and a few other weird ones). Anyway, go Marvel RPG!

Below is the guide for the Avengers Assemble one-shot which pits the Avengers, or really any team of your choice, against a strong set of interesting enemies while letting your players and yourself learn the ropes of the game. The game works best though with the recommended characters.

Also a big thank you to Chris Sims for suggesting the enemies for this one shot.

Originally played at UD Con 2014.

Organizing Crime: Where Osborn Failed

from War Machine #9 by Greg Pak, Allan Jefferson, Nelson Pereira and Jay David Ramos
from War Machine #9 by Greg Pak, Allan Jefferson, Nelson Pereira and Jay David Ramos

The Dulles Brothers lead the fight against communism. They lead the presidents to the targets at Allen Dulles was the Director of the CIA and his brother John Foster Dulles was the Secretary of State. Two men had the power, connections and belief that shaped the world during the Cold War leading us into Vietnam and the Middle East and without them, the entire world would be vastly different.

Norman Osborn had the power, he had the connections and the beliefs but what ultimately lead to his downfall through the events of Dark Reign and Siege are what made him a fascinating figure.

Osborn became the director of HAMMER after using his Thunderbolts (and information he stole from Deadpool) to stop the Skrull Invasion. He was able to completely oust the former administration, he was able to turn those would would oppose him into pariahs and outlaws and with his public support he could have ruled indefinitely except for one thing – his partners – The Cabal and The Dark Avengers.

Marvel Season One: Spider-man and The Avengers

I haven’t touched a lot of the old school comics before when it comes to Marvel and DC (and those I’ve read are because of SuperMOOC). So when the opportunity came via the library system to check out the Marvel Season One books – the updated origin graphic novels retelling the origin stories of some of the better known heroes I was game.
I really picked up the titles in order of interested and was able to touch the first few pretty quickly so the reviews are in that order as opposed to some kind of chronological one. This time I checked out Spider-man and The Avengers.

Marvel Announces New AR Moments In Classic Comics

In a PR message released today, Marvel announced that they would be adding in AR moments in new printings of classic collections starting with new hardcover versions of Secret Wars, Nextwave, Spider-man and Captain America.

“Honestly I think the AR boxes are really great for bringing people into the comics,” said Joe Quesada. “It gives the reader something to do and it stands out on the page enough so you can’t ignore it. And we got a brilliant team together to come up with all sorts of content for the new books.”

Did I ever tell you why I love Kate Bishop? Hawkeye #2 Review

Hawkeye #2 Cover
“Vagabond Code”
Hawkeye, no. 2
By Matt Fraction & David Aja
With Matt Hollingsworth
Marvel Entertainment, Nov. 2012
The stakes rise. Slowly. Not enough to wake its sleeping partner from its dreamy bliss. But the stakes rise. In “Lucky,” the first  “Clint Barton Hawkeye Adventure,” Matt Fraction and David Aja introduce the titular character in a story so relaxed that it ran a danger of underwhelming the superhero audience. A quick search around the discussion blogs showed me that by and large, the audience was on board with it. “This is what he [Clint Barton] does when he’s not being an Avenger.” It was a simple hook that fits right in the groove of a certain genre of pop-action stories.

Marvel Solicit Overviews: August 2012

DEADPOOL #59
DANIEL WAY (w) • SALVA ESPIN (a)
Cover by DAVE JOHNSON
• Part two of “Blacklisted!”
• The return of classic Deadpool Detractor, BLACK SWAN!
• Will the now-killable assassin get assassin’d?
32 PGS./Parental Advisory …$2.99

You’re seeing that right. They misspelled “supervillain” on the cover of a Marvel comic book. I cannot even. It’s like an issue of Criminal  where the credits are “Script by Ed Bubarker, Pecnils by Shawn Philllips” or All Star Western having “Western” spelled wrong on the cover.

Avx: Vs #5 (of 6)
MATT FRACTION & JASON AARON (w)
Leinil Yu & JOHN ROMITA JR. (a)
COVER BY Leinil Yu
FIGHT POSTER VARIANT By JOHN ROMITA JR.
• The premier tie-in to AVENGERS VS. X-MEN marches on!
• BLACK PANTHER VS. STORM!
• ANGEL VS. HAWKEYE!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Kind of a small complaint here, but when you have a monster like John Romita Jr. doing art for your comic, and you decide to go with a cover from a guy who is decidedly not John Romita Jr.? That’s the kind of thing that, combined with the decision to publish a title called Avengers Versus X-Men: Versus, makes me doubt your grip on sanity.

• Time is running out as the Avengers are cornered in their last stronghold!
• But the stakes change when Hope and the Scarlet Witch join forces! Why?! How?!
32 PGS. (EACH)/Rated T+ …$3.99 (EACH)

I get why “Why are the Scarlet Witch and Hope teaming up?” is being asked here, but “How?” just seems silly. Who will ask first? Will Scarlet Witch say yes? Will they take the Marvel Universe Tag Team Belt?

AVENGERS #29
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W)
WALTER SIMONSON (A)
COVER BY MIKE DEODATO
AVX TIE-IN!
• The Avengers versus the unbelievable might of the X-Men!
• The special issue of Avengers is the flip side to Wolverine and the X-Men #12.
• Witness a very surprising tie-in experience like you’ve never seen before!
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

Speaking of dumb cover choices, here you have a comic with art by WALTER MOTHERLOVING SIMONSON, and you go with Mike Deodato instead? That’s like forgoing a nice burger so you can have a salad composed entirely of cyanide and poop.

NEW AVENGERS #29
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W)
MIKE DEODATO (A)
COVER BY RON GARNEY
• AVX TIE-IN!
• They gather to stop the horrors of the Marvel universe before they happen…
…but the secret group known as the illuminati failed to stop the Phoenix time and time again.
• They come together one last time…but will it be enough?
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

So apparently the Illuminati are actually going to do something beside blast Bruce Banner’s ass into space for once?

UNCANNY X-MEN #17
KIERON GILLEN (w) • DANIEL ACUÑA (a/C)
AVX TIE-IN!
• The climactic end to the X-Men’s greatest stand against Sinister!
• The culmination of everything Sinister has planned since Uncanny #1!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Yes, the culmination of Sinister’s long, involved plan… to get a hype-ass firebird to complete his ensemble for the pimpingest photo opportunity of the Marvel Universe. Honestly, I would frame this above my fireplace, if I had a fireplace.

WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN #15
JASON AARON (w) • JORGE MOLINA (a)
Cover by STUART IMMONEN
AVX TIE-IN!
• Logan leads his own team of classic X-Men into battle!
• The Jean Grey School sees its first graduate!
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

So Professor is trying to beat Logan at his own game here, what with being in both the Illuminati and this Wolverine and the X-Men team?

AVENGERS ACADEMY #34 & 35
CHRISTOS GAGE (w) • TOM GRUMMETT (a)
CoverS by GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI
• AvX fall-out: Avengers Academy is closed…indefinitely!
• Alchemist, a.k.a. wunderkind industrialist Jeremy Briggs, offers the students a chance to
be normal again! But is there a catch? And who will accept his deal?
• Years of plot threads explode as your favorite Avengers Academy characters face their
ultimate challenges in parts 1 & 2 of “Final Exam”!
32 PGS. (EACH)/Rated T …$2.99 (EACH)

I’m not sure if this is being cancelled or what, but it seems like it is, and I’m not entirely happy about that.

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE #6
Brian Michael Bendis (w) • Mark Bagley (a/C)
• Thanos is claiming Earth as his own!
• The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy team up to bring the
Mad Titan some cosmically-charged pain!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Has Mark Bagley ever been anything better than “decidedly mediocre”?

Secret Avengers #30
RICK REMENDER (w) • MATTEO SCALERA (A)
Cover by ARTHUR ADAMS
• High-spy-adventure! Hawkeye, Venom and Ant-Man must defeat an
army of villains to grab Max Fury!
• Secrets! The truth behind the Shadow Council’s ultimate plot!
• Finally! The new Masters of Evil strike!
• Paranoia! Black Widow knows who the traitor is, but can she get to her
teammates in time to save them from his schemes?
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Is that Arcade as a bartender? That’s pretty cool. And that’s Bi-Beast back there. Also, I hope they’re not referring to the Nick Fury from the Fury MAX series, and are instead talking about yet another illegitimate son of the original Nick Fury. I hope there’s eventually a sort of Fury Corps made up of the sons of Nick Fury, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers style.

DARK AVENGERS #179
JEFF PARKER (w) • DECLAN SHALVEY & KEV WALKER (a) Cover by JOHN TYLER CHRISTOPHER
THE DARK AVENGERS AND THE THUNDERBOLTS ARE ON A COLLISION COURSE – THROUGH TIME!
• Can history’s most Wanted villains save Luke Cage from his future?!
• Jeff Parker, Declan Shalvey and Kev Walker unite for an epic tale of one man’s destiny!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

Jesus E. Neuman, JTC. It looks like you slapped a bunch of greyscaled out screenshots from a Marvel v. Capcom game into the background there. And that metal video pose the kid is in isn’t helping.

AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #10
Kelly Sue Deconnick (w)
Terry Dodson (a/C)
• BOSTON! Prepare to have your sox knocked off!
• A 50-ft tall red-headed madwoman versus an army of privatized mecha-police! Care to guess who’s caught in between?

Mysterio is pretty cool. That is literally all I have to say about this.

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

I really like this cover. That whole thing with the pentagram on the side, the cultists down there, it just looks cool.

Cover by JORGE MOLINA
GRANOV VARIANT ALSO AVAILABLE
• DIVIDED WE FALL!!!

So is this supposed to be making up for some design elements that are on the side when the final cover goes to print, because the shield thing seems really off-center.
