DC/Vertigo Solicit Overviews: October 2012

We see what lies in store in the second year of the New 52, and it’s not pretty. And it doesn’t look all that fun to read either.

The more I think about it, the more I realize this is basically the book that defines the New 52 so far, a cool new opportunity thoroughly squandered by people who really should know better, but really don’t.

While I’m sure Gorilla Warfare has been the title of a Gorilla Grodd story in the past, it’s still a really dumb pun in the best way.

It’s great that Snyder is picking up from Tony Daniel’s Detective Comics stuff, as he’s not Tony Daniel and neither is Greg Capullo, thank God, but did we really need that title? Also, maybe we don’t need to see so much of the Joker. Maybe it makes his appearances that much more effective if he’s not a regular presence.

On sale OCTOBER 10 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
• The first meeting between Batgirl and Catwoman in The New 52!
• Plus, the Talon that Barbara faced during Night of the Owls is back for revenge!

It’s scary that Ed Benes still gets work! OoOoOoOo~! His work is emblematic of some frightening attitudes towards women, not to mention an acceptance of bad art, among the superhero comics fanbase! OoOoOoOoO~!

BATGIRL ANNUAL #1
Written by GAIL SIMONE
Art by ADMIRA WIJAYA
Cover by ED BENES
On sale OCTOBER 31 • 48 pg, FC, $4.99 US • RATED T
• Batgirl is on the hunt for Catwoman – but who is after Batgirl?

Seriously. these poses are inhuman, or should I say… inhumane? OoOoOoOoOo~! These covers are both so bad, it’s like I’ve wandered into a scaring contest! OoOoOoOoOoOoOo~!

BATWOMAN #13

• Batwing vs. Father Lost and his cult of death!

BIRDS OF PREY #13
Written by DUANE SWIERCZYNSKI

On sale OCTOBER 17 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
• The team crosses paths with a cult of assassins that has ties to Katana!
• A new arc starts in the wake of a team member’s betrayal…

While I do like that this cover flies over one of the main pitfalls of female-centric comics series, that is, being unnecessarily seedy, I do prey that Travel Foreman returns to the art on this series. Why, you ask?

Just beakause.

OoOoOoOoOo~!

CATWOMAN #13
Written by ANN NOCENTI
Art by ADRIANA MELO and JULIO FERREIRA
Cover by ANDY CLARKE
On sale OCTOBER 17 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T+
• New series writer Ann Nocenti takes Catwoman deep under cover!
• Catwoman is the best thief in the world, but stealing another person is a new challenge!
• The true origin of Selina Kyle revealed!

After the cover to Catwoman #0 was released, DC and artist Guillem March caught the claw of the comics internet, with March himself getting the lion’s share of the criticism. This may or may not have led to Ann Nocenti being put on the boooooook to spin a yarn of her own, but regardless, I’m sure she’ll be a purrrrrfect fit, and this will be a wonderful story. I’d have to be mad as a hatter not to pick this up, and I certainly wouldn’t want to be late for this very important date. OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo~!

And yeah, cheshire cat, get it, because she’s Catwoman.

RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #13

Written by SCOTT LOBDELL
Art by TIMOTHY GREEN II
Cover by KENNETH ROCAFORT
On sale OCTOBER 17 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
• The conclusion of Starfire’s battle for the throne of Tamaran as she is reunited with her sister, Blackfire!
• Plus: The appearance of someone very bad from for Jason Todd’s past.

I’m only mentioning this comic because the provided cover for this solicit was actually the cover for this month’s Red Lanterns. Whoever made that mistake should be outlawed. Be an outlaw? Be assassinated by the coward Robert Ford? Whatever, Scott Lobdell sucks. OoOoOo~.

NIGHTWING #13
Written by KYLE HIGGINS
Art by EDDY BARROWS, RUY JOSE and EBER FERREIRA
Cover by EDDY BARROWS
On sale OCTOBER 17 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
• Lady Shiva makes her New 52 debut!
• Why has one of the world’s most deadly assassins returned to Gotham City?

Can’t think of any bad puns for this one. Maybe I should just call it a night. OoOoOoOoOoOo~!

A bunch of boring ass Green Lantern Comics have a bunch of boring ass covers that most likely are all supposed to be part of one boring ass image, but when separated, they all look like boring ass.

THE PHANTOM STRANGER #1
Written by DAN DIDIO
Art by BRENT ANDERSON and SCOTT HANNA
Cover by BRENT ANDERSON
1:25 Variant cover by SHANE DAVIS
On sale OCTOBER 3 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T
Retailers: This issue will ship with two covers. Please see the order form for more information.
• An all-new series focusing on secrets of The New 52 you never imagined!
• The Phantom Stranger strikes a bargain with Lord Trigon that will have serious repercussions in the DC Universe!
• From afar, Pandora watches!

If I’m not mistaken, wasn’t the point of the chain thing on the Phantom Stranger’s old costume meant to keep the cape on? In this new version, it looks more like a necklace than anything practical. Seems he’s no stranger to accessorizing! OoOoOoOoOo~!

SWORD OF SORCERY #1
Written by CHRISTY MARX
Backup story written by TONY BEDARD
Art and cover by AARON LOPRESTI
Backup story art by JESUS SAIZ
1:25 Variant cover by RYAN SOOK
On sale OCTOBER 17 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
Retailers: This issue will ship with two covers. Please see the order form for more information.
• AMETHYST returns as this amazing new series begins!
• The good news: Amy Winston can transform into Princess Amaya, protector of Gemworld!
• The bad news: It seems her family wants to kill her!
• Plus: A backup story featuring the brutality of Beowulf!

So wait, not only is this title really generic, it’s also really stupid. Sorcery is an abstract concept, and cannot hold a sword. It also does not need one, for it’s an abstract concept, and those are rarely the subject of physical attacks. Is the subject of the title a person who would be the figurative sword of sorcery, accomplishing the aims of the abstract concept of sorcery in its stead? Or is this just a really badly named anthology?

• If they can’t escape Lucifer’s clutches, Jason Blood and the rest of the Earth are doomed.

This cover just raises a lot of questions. Why is there a blurry, vague explosion behind everyone, and why is nobody noticing it? Who let blood-angel guy into the body oil? Is Etrigan technically groping Vandal Savage, and if so, does that look on his face mean he’s enjoying it? Which he was I referring to in the previous question?

I love the shading on this cover. It’s kind of Dave Johnson-y, and Dave Johnson is one of my favorites.

DC has a pretty good kids’ line, and there’s a free Halloween special thing that reprints some of the old Slott/Templeton Batman Adventures.

• Take a look at the twisted origins of Eternia’s most loathsome and terrible villain.
• What horrific events from Skeletor’s secret past defined the evil despot he became?

Here’s why living in 2012 is fucking awesome. Frazier Irving, who is really awesome at drawing crazy stuff, is illustrating a comic about an evil skeleton, and if it looks at all like the cover here, it is going to be awesome as hell. If the writing is shitty, it won’t matter. It’s Frazier Irving drawing an evil skeleton guy. And you can pay 3 bucks for it.
